Pal’s portrayal of Lassie in Lassie Come Home was so moving that he became an overnight sensation. The film, starring a young Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor, was a critical and commercial success. Pal’s ability to convey deep emotion through his eyes and body language set him apart from other animal actors.

Following this success, Pal went on to star in six more MGM Lassie films, solidifying the character’s place in pop culture. When the studio transitioned Lassie to television in the 1950s, Pal retired, passing the torch to his descendants, who continued the role for generations.
